Dad's Witness
Marion Sullivan McComis (Marine World War II)
Back in the early 1970's, Dad was in the VA hospital with cirrhosis of the liver, due to heavy drinking. The doctors had given up on him.
Dad was in the hospital for a year. By this time his stomach had swollen to the size of a watermelon. The doctors told Mom and I that Dad was going to die soon.
That night, Dad had a vision of a fiery pit, with smoke and brimstone, and he was tossed into the flames. He said he saw an ugly beast with a large mallet, pounding him into the pit. Dad said, as he looked up, "God forgive me".
The next morning, when he awoke, he had burns on his legs and hips. The doctors didn't understand what had happened, but within the next seven days the burns disappeared and his stomach went down. Dad came home from the hospital feeling fine.
Two weeks went by, and I had good news to tell him, so I phoned him. I could tell by the "slurring" on the phone that Dad was drunk again. I said to him, "don't you want to see your next grandchild born"? The next day he was back in the VA hospital again, sick unto death.
The second vision came. The smoke and the brimstone, and the ugly beast hammering him into the fiery pit. This time Dad said, "I vow to You God forgive me, I ask You for ten years to serve You".
Well, our daughter Rachel was born December 4, 1972.
Dad did serve the Living God.
Then it was 1982, and Dad was getting sick. It was cancer. Dad was back in the VA hospital, but the cancer had gone too far.
December 4th I called the hospital, for I hadn't heard any news. The doctors said that they had given him a transfusion of blood that day, because if they hadn't, he would have died. December 4th, 1982. That was the 10th year to the day that Dad had asked God for.
Ten years, and by the Grace of God, ten years he served the Living God.
Dad went home to be with the Lord on January 15, 1983. While he was in the VA hospital, he was leading others to Jesus Christ.
